Crafty Book Reviews January 2013

Do you work with yarn?  Hooks or needles?  Well, let me tell you about this new addiction of mine: amigurumi.  It's the Japanese crochet style of making little versions of dolls, food, etc.  And I am HOOKED.  No pun intended.  So this month's Crafty Book Review is going to be all about amigurumi...

Maybe you've heard of it...maybe not.  Let me tell you, it's the most addicting thing I have touched since Smarties candy!

Creepy Cute Crochet by Christen Haden is a book I picked up as a gift for a friend and while browsing through it, I decided to get myself a copy as well.  These are the cutest, creepiest, and FUNNEST crochet creatures I've ever made!  The variations are endless, once you've mastered a few basic stitches and I do mean BASIC.  The dolls appeal to my uber-geek.  These are not your everyday dolls - there are Zombie Office Drones, Ninjas, well-known Knights of the Realm (it really was just a flesh wound), and many more.  My favorite was my variation of the Black Knight from the Holy Grail.  I used black yarn instead of gray and he turned out fantastic!  Christen's instructions are easy to follow and she's a story all by herself!

Christen Haden is an etsy success gone wild.  She started crocheting amigurumi for her etsy shop a million years ago (okay, maybe just a thousand) and not only selling her creations, but her patterns, too!  After a book publisher noticed her patterns, they asked if she was interested in publishing a book of patterns and her  story was made.

Even if you've never crocheted a day in your life, if you can follow a pattern - pick up a hook, a skein of yarn, and you are on your way.  It looks complex, and frankly, I made it harder than it looks...and it looks really hard!  But it's so simple, I was amazed at how fast I was able to get these little critters done!  The coolest thing of all is that you can take what you've learned in this crazy fun pattern book and make your own variations of amigurumi...below is the selection as written in the book by Christen.  Below that are the three dolls I made using her basic head and body with my own character favorites!

Ky is owner and creator of Book-Inz, the handmade, fabric magnetic bookmark that's taking book readers by storm!  When she's not creating a happier, dog ear free world for books, she's maniacally crocheting away at her most recent amigurumi creations.
